In short
The Repayment Assistance Plan, available from 1 July 2026, sets payments at 1% to 10% of adjusted gross income in $10,000 bands ($10 a month below $10,000 of AGI, 10% above $100,000), minus $50 per dependent, with a $10 minimum. Interest the payment does not cover is waived and principal falls by at least $50 a month, so balances never grow; the remainder is forgiven after 30 years, or after 120 payments under PSLF.
Who this is for: US federal student loan borrowers moving to or starting on the Repayment Assistance Plan.
How the Repayment Assistance Plan works
| Adjusted gross income | Share of AGI | Monthly before dependents |
|---|---|---|
| $10,000 or less | flat | $10 |
| $10,001–$20,000 | 1% | $8–17 |
| $20,001–$30,000 | 2% | $33–50 |
| $30,001–$40,000 | 3% | $75–100 |
| $40,001–$50,000 | 4% | $133–167 |
| $50,001–$60,000 | 5% | $208–250 |
| $60,001–$70,000 | 6% | $300–350 |
| $70,001–$80,000 | 7% | $408–467 |
| $80,001–$90,000 | 8% | $533–600 |
| $90,001–$100,000 | 9% | $675–750 |
| Over $100,000 | 10% | $833+ |
- Subtract $50 a month per dependent; the minimum payment is $10.
- Interest your payment does not cover is waived, and principal is reduced by at least $50 a month — balances never grow on RAP.
- Forgiveness after 30 years of payments (360 months); PSLF after 120 qualifying months in public service.
- Unlike older plans there is no poverty-line exclusion, so low-income borrowers pay more than under SAVE, while the subsidy keeps balances from ballooning.

Assumptions
- Monthly = max($10, AGI × bracket % ÷ 12 − $50 × dependents); $10 flat at AGI ≤ $10,000.
- Simulation: income grows annually; unpaid interest waived; principal falls by at least $50 a month; forgiveness at 360 months or 120 PSLF payments.
- Standard plan = 10-year amortisation at the entered rate.
Worked example
$55,000 falls in the 5% band: $2,750 a year = $229 a month. Interest accrues at $244 a month, so $15 is waived and the government tops up principal to a $50 monthly reduction. The standard 10-year payment would be $511. With income rising 3% a year the payment climbs through the 6% and 7% bands and the loan is paid off in roughly 16 years 9 months, with about $78,000 paid in total — versus $61,300 on the standard plan. At $75,000 of AGI the payment would be $438; at $100,000, $750.
Frequently asked questions
What is the RAP student loan payment?
1–10% of adjusted gross income depending on a $10,000-wide income band, minus $50 per dependent, minimum $10 a month, for 30 years or until paid off.
Does interest grow on RAP?
No — any interest your payment does not cover is waived, and principal falls by at least $50 a month even if your payment is tiny.
Can I stay on SAVE or PAYE?
Existing borrowers must move to RAP or IBR by 1 July 2028; new loans from 1 July 2026 can only use RAP or the new Standard plan.
Does RAP count for PSLF?
Yes — RAP payments while working full-time for a government or 501(c)(3) employer count toward the 120 payments.
Is RAP better than IBR?
RAP has no poverty-line exclusion, so low earners pay more than on IBR, but balances cannot grow and the $50 principal match helps; the PSLF calculator compares the two.
What AGI does RAP use?
The prior year's return — joint AGI if married filing jointly, your own if filing separately; recertified every year.
