In short

In Pakistan a provident fund takes a fixed percentage of basic salary from the employee (commonly 8.33% or 10%) matched by the employer, credits annual profit of around 10–15%, and pays the whole balance tax-free on leaving if the fund is recognised by the FBR; the employer's contribution is tax-free up to the lower of 10% of salary or PKR 150,000 a year.

How provident funds work in Pakistan

  • Contributions: the employee contributes a fixed percentage of basic salary — 8.33% (one-twelfth) or 10% are the common rates — and the employer matches it. Both are credited to the member's account monthly.
  • Profit: the fund trustees invest (mostly government securities, bank deposits, some funds) and credit profit annually, typically in line with policy rates — 10–15% in recent years.
  • Withdrawal: the full balance (both shares plus profit) is paid on leaving, retirement or death; many funds allow partial withdrawals or loans for housing, medical or education. Some employers vest their share only after a minimum service period — check the trust deed.
  • Tax: for a recognised provident fund (approved by the Commissioner), the employer's contribution up to the lower of 10% of salary or PKR 150,000 a year is not taxed as salary, profit is exempt up to 16% or the SBP rate + 1%, and the final payout is tax-free. The employee's contribution qualifies for a tax credit.

Provident fund and gratuity are different benefits: gratuity is a lump sum the employer pays from its own funds at 30 days' wages per year; PF is a savings account both sides pay into. Some employers offer one, some both.

Provident fund contribution by basic salary (8.33% and 10% schemes)

How much provident fund is deducted from a PKR 50,000 or 100,000 basic salary? Most Pakistani employers deduct 8.33% or 10% of basic salary and match it; the table shows the employee deduction, the combined monthly credit and the yearly addition to your balance before profit.

Employer contributions are tax-free up to 10% of salary or PKR 150,000 a year in a recognised fund; the employee share qualifies for a tax credit.

Assumptions

  • Monthly contributions = basic × employee % and × employer %, added before compounding at the profit rate monthly; basic grows annually by the raise %.
  • Tax-free check: employer contribution ≤ lower of 10% of annual basic or PKR 150,000.
  • Vesting rules, loans and withdrawals are not modelled.

Worked example

PKR 60,000 basic, 8.33% each side, 12% profit, 8% raises, 10 years

Monthly contributions start at PKR 5,000 + 5,000. Over 10 years you contribute about PKR 869,000, the employer the same, and profit adds roughly PKR 1.28 million → balance ≈ PKR 3.02 million, about 25 months of your final basic salary.

Frequently asked questions

Is provident fund mandatory in Pakistan?

Not by general law for private employers (except where the Standing Orders or a wage board require it); it is a contractual benefit, but most medium and large employers provide one.

Is PF withdrawal taxed?

Not from a recognised (approved) fund. From an unrecognised fund the employer's contributions and profit are taxed as salary when paid out.

Can I take a loan from my provident fund?

Most trust deeds allow a loan or non-refundable withdrawal of up to the member's own contributions (sometimes more) for housing, marriage, medical or education.

What happens to my PF if I change jobs?

It is paid out when you leave; there is no transfer between employers' funds in Pakistan. Reinvest it in the new employer's scheme or a voluntary pension scheme (VPS) to keep the tax benefit.

What percentage is provident fund in Pakistan?

Commonly 8.33% of basic salary from the employee, matched by the employer; some employers use 10%.

Is provident fund taxable in Pakistan?

Not when paid out from a recognised fund; employer contributions above 10% of salary or PKR 150,000 a year are taxed as salary.

How is provident fund calculated on salary?

Each month a fixed percentage of basic salary — commonly 8.33% (one-twelfth) or 10% — is deducted from you and matched by the employer; both shares plus the fund's profit accumulate to your balance. On a PKR 50,000 basic at 10% that is PKR 10,000 a month.

Is employer provident fund contribution taxable?

Not up to 10% of salary or PKR 150,000 a year in a recognised fund; anything above that limit is added to your taxable salary. Your own contribution earns a tax credit.

What is the difference between provident fund and gratuity in Pakistan?

Provident fund is a contributory savings account built every month by you and the employer; gratuity is a lump sum the employer alone pays at leaving (typically 30 days' last salary per year of service). Many employers offer one or the other, some both.

How much provident fund will I have after 10 years?

About PKR 3.1 million on a PKR 50,000 basic at 10% + 10% with a 12% fund return and 8% salary growth — roughly 26 times your first year's combined contribution. Use the calculator for your own rate and growth assumptions.

Can I withdraw my provident fund while still employed?

Partial withdrawals or loans are allowed under the fund rules for specific purposes (house purchase, medical, marriage, education); full withdrawal is only at resignation, retirement or death.

People also ask

How is provident fund calculated in Pakistan?

A fixed percentage of basic salary — commonly 8.33% or 10% — is deducted from the employee and matched by the employer each month; the fund credits profit annually and the balance is paid out on leaving.

Is provident fund withdrawal taxable in Pakistan?

Not from a recognised provident fund approved by the Commissioner; the accumulated balance including the employer share and profit is exempt on withdrawal.

Can I withdraw provident fund while working?

Most fund rules allow partial advances for house purchase, marriage, medical treatment or education, repayable or non-refundable depending on the trust deed.

What happens to provident fund if I resign?

Your own contributions plus profit are always paid; the employer's share usually vests after a minimum service period set by the fund rules (often 2–5 years).

What profit rate do provident funds pay?

Funds invest in government securities and bank deposits; credited rates have followed the SBP policy rate — the calculator defaults to 12% and lets you change it.

Is the employer's provident fund contribution taxable?

Exempt up to the lower of 10% of basic salary and PKR 150,000 a year; any excess is added to your taxable salary.

Provident fund or gratuity — which is better?

Provident fund grows with profit and vests gradually; gratuity is a lump sum of about 30 days' pay per year paid only at exit. Many employers provide both.

How much will my provident fund be after 10 years?

On a PKR 50,000 basic with 8.33% each side and 12% profit, roughly PKR 1.9 million with monthly compounding — enter your own figures for the projection.
