Who this is for: Shoppers, online sellers, travellers and anyone comparing the cost of a purchase across states or working out the tax hidden in a receipt total.

Not tax or legal advice. General sales tax estimate for the rate you select; actual rates depend on the exact address and the product (groceries, clothing, vehicles, meals and lodging are taxed differently in many states).

How US sales tax works — state and city rates in 2026

US sales tax is a state rate plus local add-ons — counties, cities, transit and special districts — collected together at the register. Forty-five states and DC have a state sales tax (Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon do not; Alaska lets localities charge up to 7.85%). As of 1 July 2026 the highest combined averages are Louisiana 10.13%, Tennessee 9.61%, Washington 9.57%, Arkansas 9.48% and Alabama 9.46%; the lowest among states with a tax are Hawaii 4.50%, Wyoming 5.39%, Maine 5.50% and Wisconsin 5.72%.

Inside a big city the rate is usually above the state average: Seattle 10.55%, Chicago and Los Angeles 10.25%, San Jose, New Orleans and Birmingham 10.00%, Nashville and Memphis 9.75%, Denver 9.15%, Phoenix 9.10%, St. Louis 9.68%, Minneapolis 9.025%, New York City 8.875%. Texas cities almost all sit at the 8.25% statutory cap. The city list holds the 50 largest cities with rates checked against state revenue-department tables in October 2026; use "Custom rate" for any other address (your receipt or the state's rate lookup gives the exact figure).

Assumptions

  • Combined rate = state rate + local rate for the city selected (50 largest cities, checked October 2026) or the state's average local rate (Tax Foundation, 1 July 2026).
  • Add mode: tax = price × rate; reverse mode: price = total ÷ (1 + rate).
  • General merchandise rate only — product exemptions and special rates for food, clothing, vehicles, meals and lodging are not applied.

Worked example

$1,250 purchase in Chicago, Illinois (10.25%)

6.25% state + 4.00% local (Cook County, Chicago home-rule and RTA) = 10.25%. Tax = $1,250 × 10.25% = $128.13; total $1,378.13. The same purchase costs $1,360.94 in New York City (8.875%), $1,353.13 in Houston (8.25%), $1,337.50 in Miami (7.0%) and $1,250 in Portland, Oregon. If a receipt shows $1,378.13 including tax, the pre-tax price is $1,378.13 ÷ 1.1025 = $1,250.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate sales tax backwards from a total?

Divide the total by (1 + rate): $1,378.13 ÷ 1.1025 = $1,250 pre-tax, so the tax was $128.13. Choose "After tax" above and the calculator does this.

Do online purchases get charged sales tax?

Yes — since the 2018 Wayfair decision, sellers above a state's threshold (usually $100,000 of sales) must collect the rate at the delivery address, and marketplaces like Amazon collect for third-party sellers.

Is sales tax deductible?

Itemisers may deduct either state income tax or state sales tax (not both) within the SALT cap — $40,400 for 2026. Choosing sales tax usually only pays in no-income-tax states or after a big purchase such as a car.
