In short

The Saudi dependent levy is SAR 400 per dependent per month — SAR 4,800 a year each, SAR 14,400 for three — paid in advance for the whole Iqama period before dependents can be renewed, with a 90-day grace for new arrivals, a SAR 500 annual Iqama fee for dependents aged 18 and over (none under 18), SAR 51.75 Absher per Iqama and mandatory health insurance; it is normally the employee's cost unless the contract says otherwise.

Who this is for: Expatriate workers in Saudi Arabia with family on their Iqama budgeting the levy for the next renewal, and employers who cover family fees under senior contracts.

Not tax or legal advice. Fee figures are those published by Saudi expat advisory sources and may change by Ministry decision; confirm the exact amount shown in Absher before paying. Insurance prices vary by insurer and age.

The Saudi dependent fee explained

Since July 2017 every expatriate worker in Saudi Arabia pays a monthly dependent levy for each family member on their sponsorship; it rose in steps to SAR 400 per dependent per month from July 2020, where it has stayed. The levy is not billed monthly: it is paid in advance for the whole Iqama period at renewal through Absher — SAR 4,800 a year per dependent, SAR 14,400 for a family of three — and renewal is blocked until it is paid. Newly arrived dependents get a 90-day grace period.

On top of the levy, dependents aged 18 and over pay the SAR 500 annual Iqama fee (children under 18 are exempt), each Iqama carries a SAR 51.75 Absher processing charge, and every dependent needs CCHI-approved health insurance before renewal. The levy is legally the sponsor's cost but is usually passed to the employee unless the employment contract says the company covers it — which is why the calculator lets you show who pays.

Assumptions

  • Dependent levy SAR 400 per dependent per month, charged for the full renewal period in advance.
  • Dependent Iqama fee SAR 500 a year for dependents aged 18+, pro-rated to the period; none under 18.
  • Absher SAR 51.75 per Iqama; insurance at the annual premium entered, pro-rated.
  • New arrivals exempt from the levy for their first 90 days; Premium Residency and other exemptions not modelled.

Worked example

Wife and two children (one aged 18), 12-month renewal, SAR 800 insurance each

Levy 3 × 400 × 12 = SAR 14,400; Iqama fee for the one adult dependent SAR 500; Absher 3 × 51.75 = SAR 155.25; insurance SAR 2,400. Total SAR 17,455 for the year, about SAR 1,455 a month — SAR 14,400 of which is the levy alone.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the dependent fee in Saudi Arabia in 2026?

SAR 400 per dependent per month — SAR 4,800 a year each — unchanged since July 2020.

Is the fee paid monthly?

No. It is paid in one amount for the full Iqama period (3, 6, 9 or 12 months) before the dependent's Iqama can be renewed.

Do children pay the levy?

Yes, the SAR 400 levy applies to every dependent regardless of age. Only the SAR 500 Iqama fee is waived for dependents under 18.

Who pays — me or my employer?

By default the employee, through Absher. Some contracts, especially for senior roles, make the employer responsible.

Is there any exemption?

A 90-day grace period for newly arrived dependents; otherwise no general exemption. Premium Residency holders and their dependents are exempt.

Is the levy refundable if my family leaves?

No. Unused months are not refunded, so time renewals carefully if dependents are on a final exit.

Can I pay the levy monthly?

No; Absher takes the full amount for the renewal period. Choosing a 3-month renewal reduces the lump sum but not the annual cost.

Do parents on a visit visa pay the levy?

No — the levy applies to dependents on residence (Iqama) sponsorship, not family visit visas.
