In short

Saudi car finance is quoted as a flat profit rate on murabaha or lease-to-own contracts: SAR 108,000 financed at 4% flat over 60 months costs SAR 2,160 a month (about 7.4% APR). SAMA limits the term to five years, caps salary-linked deductions at 33.33% of gross salary (25% for retirees) and assesses balloon deals on the average installment.

Who this is for: Buyers comparing bank and dealer auto-finance offers in Saudi Arabia, including lease-to-own deals with a balloon, against the SAMA salary limit.

Not tax or legal advice. Profit rates, down payments and fees vary by bank, car and employer category. Confirm the APR, total cost and balloon terms on the bank's offer before signing.

How car finance works in Saudi Arabia

Saudi banks and finance companies quote a flat annual profit rate — 2.5% to 5% is typical in 2026 — on murabaha (buy-and-resell) or lease-to-own contracts. The installment is simply (amount financed + flat profit − balloon) ÷ months, which is why a 4% flat rate costs about 7.4% APR on a reducing balance. SAMA limits the term to 60 months and total salary-linked deductions to 33.33% of gross salary (25% for retirees).

  • Balloon / residual: lease-to-own deals defer 20–50% of the price to the end; the monthly installment looks cheaper but SAMA requires banks to assess affordability on the average of all installments including the balloon.
  • Down payment: commonly 10–20%; zero-down offers exist for government and salary-transfer customers, at a higher profit rate.
  • Costs on top: 15% VAT is included in the price, admin fees (around 1%, often capped at SAR 5,000), comprehensive insurance for the whole term, and an early-settlement charge capped at three months' profit or SAR 5,000.
  • Expatriates can finance a car with a valid iqama, usually for a term ending before the iqama/contract expiry, and may need a larger down payment.

Assumptions

  • Flat: installment = (financed + financed × flat × years − balloon) ÷ months; APR solved from the installment and balloon; reducing: amortisation with the balloon discounted.
  • SAMA checks: term ≤ 60 months; (average installment incl. balloon + other installments) ≤ 33.33% of salary; maximum financing from the 33.33% capacity at the APR.
  • Total cost = down payment + installments + balloon + admin fee + insurance × term; early-settlement charge = min(3 months' profit on the balance, SAR 5,000).

Worked example

SAR 120,000 car, 10% down, 4% flat over 60 months, salary SAR 12,000

Amount financed SAR 108,000; flat profit 108,000 × 4% × 5 = SAR 21,600 → installment SAR 2,160 a month (about 7.4% APR). Total cost with a SAR 1,000 fee and SAR 3,500 a year insurance = 12,000 + 129,600 + 1,000 + 17,500 = SAR 160,100. 2,160 ÷ 12,000 = 18% of salary — within the 33.33% limit; at the limit the bank could finance about SAR 212,000 of car on this salary. With a 30% balloon (SAR 36,000) the installment falls to SAR 1,560 but the balloon is still owed at month 60.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum car loan term in Saudi Arabia?

60 months — SAMA limits consumer finance, including auto finance and lease-to-own, to five years; only real-estate finance and credit cards are exempt.

How much salary do I need for a car loan in Saudi Arabia?

Your total salary deductions for finance cannot exceed 33.33% of gross salary: a SAR 2,000 installment needs about SAR 6,000 of salary with no other loans. Banks also set minimum salaries of SAR 3,000–5,000.

Is a 3% flat rate a good deal?

It is about 5.5% APR over five years, which is competitive; compare the APR the bank must disclose rather than the flat rate, and add the admin fee and mandatory insurance.

Can expats get car finance in Saudi Arabia?

Yes, with a valid iqama, salary transfer or bank statements and usually a 10–20% down payment; the term normally cannot extend beyond the iqama or employment contract.

What is a balloon payment in a Saudi car lease?

A final lump sum (often 20–50% of the price) deferred to the end of a lease-to-own contract — you pay it, refinance it or return the car. It lowers the monthly installment but not the total cost.

How much is the early settlement fee?

Capped by SAMA at the lower of the profit for the next three months or SAR 5,000; Islamic contracts give a rebate on the remaining profit.

How much is car insurance in Saudi Arabia?

Comprehensive cover typically costs 2–4% of the car's value a year (more for young drivers and luxury cars) and is mandatory for the finance term; third-party-only cover is cheaper but not accepted by financiers.

Can I sell a financed car?

Only with the bank's release: you settle the balance (early-settlement charge capped at three months' profit or SAR 5,000) or the buyer takes over the finance with the bank's approval.
