In short

Zakat is 2.5% of net zakatable wealth — cash, bank balances, gold, silver, investments and trade stock minus debts due — held for one lunar year above the nisab of 7.5 tola of gold or 52.5 tola of silver (the silver nisab is the usual basis for mixed assets in Pakistan). Pakistani banks deduct 2.5% from savings accounts on 1 Ramadan unless an exemption is filed.

Who this is for: Muslims in Pakistan working out annual zakat on cash, gold, silver, savings, investments and business stock.

Not tax or legal advice. This is an arithmetic aid using the common 2.5% rule and nisab thresholds, not a religious ruling. Which assets count, which nisab applies and your zakat date should follow the guidance of a qualified scholar.

How zakat is calculated

Zakat is 2.5% of your net zakatable wealth on your zakat date, if that wealth is at or above the nisab and you have held it for a lunar year:

  • Zakatable: cash and bank balances, savings certificates and prize bonds, money owed to you that you expect back (committee/BC contributions, loans given), gold and silver in any form, shares and funds at market value, cryptocurrency, and trade stock of a business.
  • Not zakatable: your home, car, furniture, personal clothing, tools of trade, and property or machinery used in a business (though rental income received is).
  • Deduct: debts that fall due within the year — the next 12 months of loan instalments, unpaid bills, credit-card balances.

Nisab is the minimum wealth that attracts zakat: 7.5 tola (87.48 g) of gold or 52.5 tola (612.36 g) of silver. When wealth is mixed (cash + gold + other), most Pakistani scholars apply the silver nisab, which is far lower in rupees; the gold nisab is used by some when gold is the only asset. Choose the basis your own scholar or school recommends.

In Pakistan, banks deduct zakat from savings accounts on 1 Ramadan under the Zakat and Ushr Ordinance; the amount already deducted can be subtracted from what you pay directly.

Assumptions

  • Zakatable = cash + receivables + gold + silver + investments + stock, less debts due; zakat = 2.5% if net ≥ nisab.
  • Nisab = 52.5 tola × silver price (default basis) or 7.5 tola × gold price, using the prices you enter.
  • Does not apply hawl timing or school-specific rules on jewellery or receivables.

Worked example

PKR 800,000 in the bank, 5 tola gold, PKR 150,000 of debt

Gold at PKR 320,000/tola = PKR 1,600,000. Gross = 800,000 + 1,600,000 = PKR 2,400,000; net after debt = PKR 2,250,000.
Silver nisab at PKR 3,500/tola = 52.5 × 3,500 = PKR 183,750 — well below the net wealth, so zakat is due: 2,250,000 × 2.5% = PKR 56,250.

Frequently asked questions

Is zakat due on the gold my wife wears?

Under the Hanafi view followed by most Pakistanis, yes — all gold and silver jewellery is zakatable at its current value, regardless of use. Some other schools exempt jewellery in regular personal use.

Do I pay zakat on my salary?

Not on salary as income — zakat is on what you still hold on your zakat date. Salary saved into your bank balance is included through the cash figure.

Is zakat due on a plot of land or a house I rent out?

Not on the property itself if it is for personal use or rental. Land bought purely to resell is trade stock and is zakatable at market value.

Can I count the bank's Ramadan deduction?

Yes. The 2.5% the bank deducts on 1 Ramadan is zakat already paid; subtract it from your calculated total. If you prefer to pay directly, file the CZ-50 declaration with the bank before Ramadan.

What is the nisab for zakat in Pakistan?

7.5 tola of gold or 52.5 tola of silver; at current prices the silver nisab is a few hundred thousand rupees, and it is the basis most Pakistani scholars apply to mixed assets.

When do banks deduct zakat in Pakistan?

On the first of Ramadan, at 2.5% of savings-account balances above the announced nisab, unless a CZ-50 exemption declaration is filed.

People also ask

How is zakat calculated on salary?

Zakat is not on income but on savings: 2.5% of cash, bank balances, gold, silver and investments held for one lunar year above the nisab.

What is the nisab for zakat in 2026?

The value of 612.36 grams of silver (52.5 tola) or 87.48 grams of gold (7.5 tola); most scholars use the silver value, which is the lower threshold — check today's rate.

Is zakat due on gold jewellery?

Yes under the Hanafi view, on the gold weight at market value if the total zakatable wealth exceeds nisab; some other schools exempt personal jewellery.

Does the bank deduct zakat in Pakistan?

Yes, 2.5% from savings and PLS accounts above the notified nisab on the 1st of Ramadan, unless you file a declaration of exemption (CZ-50) or hold a current account.

Is zakat due on provident fund?

Opinions differ; many scholars hold it is due on the accessible balance (your own contributions) once received, others on the full vested amount annually.

Can I deduct loans before calculating zakat?

Debts due within the year are deducted from zakatable assets; long-term loans are generally deducted only for the instalments due in the year.

Is zakat due on property?

Not on the home you live in; property bought for resale is a trading asset and zakatable at market value, and rental income is zakatable once saved.

When should I pay zakat?

On your personal zakat date — one lunar year after your wealth first reached nisab — though many pay in Ramadan for the extra reward.
