GPA & CGPA Calculator (HEC 4.0 Scale)

Calculate semester GPA and cumulative CGPA on the HEC 4.0 scale from marks or letter grades and credit hours, and see what you need next semester to hit a target CGPA.

Enter this semester's courses. Type marks out of 100 (e.g. 78) or a letter grade (A, B+, C-…). Leave unused rows blank.

In short

On the HEC 4.0 scale, GPA = sum of (grade points × credit hours) ÷ total credit hours, and CGPA applies the same formula across all semesters. The common grading table is 85+ = A (4.00), 80–84 = A- (3.70), 75–79 = B+ (3.30), 70–74 = B (3.00), 65–69 = B- (2.70), 61–64 = C+ (2.30), 58–60 = C (2.00), 55–57 = C- (1.70), 50–54 = D (1.00), below 50 = F.

Not tax or legal advice. Uses the HEC 4.0 absolute grading table; universities may apply their own thresholds or relative grading, so confirm with your institution's prospectus.

How GPA and CGPA are calculated

Each course earns grade points × credit hours. Semester GPA is the sum of those divided by the semester's credit hours; CGPA is the same sum across every semester divided by all credit hours completed:

GPA = Σ(points × credits) ÷ Σ credits   New CGPA = (old CGPA × old credits + this semester's points) ÷ (old + new credits)

The HEC's recommended absolute scale maps marks to letter grades and points as listed under the result. Many universities (NUST, FAST, COMSATS, UET, Punjab University semester system) use this table or a close variant; LUMS and some others use relative grading, where the letter is decided by the class curve and only the letter → points step applies.

For scholarships and foreign applications, a CGPA of 3.0 is usually the minimum and 3.5+ is competitive; a 2.0 is the typical graduation floor, and probation starts below it.

Assumptions

  • Marks are mapped to grade points using the HEC table in the Pakistan rules file; letter grades map directly; a decimal ≤ 4 is read as grade points.
  • Blank credit hours default to 3.
  • CGPA = (previous CGPA × previous credits + this semester's points) ÷ total credits; the target line solves for next semester's GPA.

Worked example

Four courses: 78, 85, 69, B+ with 3, 3, 4, 3 credit hours

78 → B+ 3.30 × 3 = 9.90; 85 → A 4.00 × 3 = 12.00; 69 → B- 2.70 × 4 = 10.80; B+ 3.30 × 3 = 9.90.
Total = 42.60 points over 13 credit hours → GPA 3.28.
With a previous CGPA of 3.10 over 60 credits: (3.10 × 60 + 42.60) ÷ 73 = CGPA 3.13. To reach 3.50 after an 18-credit next semester you would need a 4.99 — not possible in one semester; a 4.00 next semester takes you to 3.30.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert CGPA to percentage?

There is no single formula; HEC does not prescribe one. A common approximation used by universities on transcripts is percentage = CGPA × 25 (so 3.2 ≈ 80%), but use your own university's stated conversion for applications.

Does a repeated course count twice?

Most universities replace the old grade with the new one in the CGPA (the transcript shows both). Enter only the latest attempt here.

What CGPA do I need for an HEC scholarship or a foreign master's?

HEC overseas scholarships typically require 3.0/4.0 (or 60% in the annual system); competitive foreign programmes generally look for 3.3–3.5+.

Is this the same as the annual-system percentage?

No. Annual-system degrees (BA/BSc two-year, older MA) report marks and divisions, not GPA. This tool is for semester-system degrees on the 4.0 scale.

How is CGPA calculated in Pakistan?

Sum of grade points × credit hours across all semesters, divided by total credit hours, on the 4.0 scale.

What is a good CGPA in Pakistan?

3.0 is the usual scholarship minimum; 3.5 and above is competitive for foreign master's programmes and top employers.
