In short
Canadian sales tax is 5% GST federally, combined into a 13% HST in Ontario, 14% in Nova Scotia and 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and PEI, with separate provincial taxes in BC (7%), Manitoba (7%), Saskatchewan (6%) and Quebec (9.975% QST), and GST only in Alberta and the territories; $1,000 before tax is $1,130 in Ontario, $1,120 in BC and $1,050 in Alberta. Businesses must register once taxable revenue exceeds $30,000.
Who this is for: Shoppers, freelancers and small businesses adding or extracting sales tax, estimating a quarterly GST/HST return or checking the registration threshold.
GST, HST, PST and QST: which tax applies where
Canada layers a 5% federal GST with provincial sales taxes in three patterns. The Atlantic provinces and Ontario merged them into a single HST — 13% in Ontario, 14% in Nova Scotia, 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and PEI — collected by the CRA with full input tax credits. BC (7%), Saskatchewan (6%) and Manitoba (7% RST) run a separate PST on top of GST that businesses cannot recover. Quebec's QST (9.975%) is harmonised in practice — charged on the GST-exclusive price with input tax refunds — and administered by Revenu Québec. Alberta and the three territories charge GST only.
- Registration: mandatory once taxable revenue exceeds $30,000 over four consecutive quarters (or in one quarter); voluntary below that to recover input tax credits.
- Filing: annually for most small businesses (quarterly instalments if net tax exceeds $3,000), quarterly or monthly for larger ones; the quick method lets small businesses remit a flat percentage instead of tracking credits.
- New housing: GST/HST applies to new homes with a federal rebate up to $450,000 and provincial rebates (Ontario up to $24,000); resale homes are exempt. From 2025 first-time buyers get a full GST rebate on new homes up to $1 million, phased out to $1.5 million.
- GST/HST credit: a quarterly refundable payment to lower-income households — about $533 a year for a single adult plus amounts per child — applied for through the tax return.

Assumptions
- Rates: GST 5%; HST ON 13%, NS 14%, NB/NL/PE 15%; QST 9.975% on the GST-exclusive price; PST BC 7%, MB 7%, SK 6%; GST only AB/NT/YT/NU. Tax-included amounts are divided by (1 + total rate).
- Business net tax = tax collected on sales − input tax credits on purchases (GST/HST and QST only; PST is not creditable).
- Registration check against the $30,000 small-supplier threshold; zero-rated and exempt supplies not modelled.
Worked example
HST 13% → tax $130, total $1,130 (federal part $50, provincial $80). The same $1,000 is $1,120 in BC (5% + 7%), $1,050 in Alberta, $1,149.75 in Quebec and $1,140 in Nova Scotia. The business collects $7,800 of HST on $60,000 of sales, claims $2,600 of input tax credits on $20,000 of purchases and remits $5,200 for the quarter.
Frequently asked questions
What is the HST rate in Ontario?
13% — 5% federal GST plus an 8% provincial portion — charged on most goods and services; basic groceries, prescription drugs, residential rent and most health and child-care services are zero-rated or exempt.
How do I calculate GST/HST included in a price?
Divide the total by 1 + the rate: in Ontario $1,130 ÷ 1.13 = $1,000 before tax, so $130 is HST. In Quebec divide by 1.14975; in BC by 1.12.
Which province has the lowest sales tax?
Alberta and the three territories (5% GST only); Saskatchewan is next at 11%, then BC and Manitoba at 12%. The Atlantic provinces are highest at 14–15% HST.
When do I have to register for GST/HST?
When your taxable revenue exceeds $30,000 in four consecutive calendar quarters or in a single quarter — within 29 days — unless you are a small supplier by choice; ride-share and taxi drivers must register from the first dollar.
Can I claim back PST?
No — PST in BC, Saskatchewan and Manitoba is a cost to businesses (except on goods bought for resale), unlike GST/HST and QST, which are recoverable through input tax credits.
What is the GST/HST credit?
A tax-free quarterly payment to individuals and families with low or modest incomes — paid in July, October, January and April based on the previous year's return; no separate application is needed.
What is the quick method?
Small businesses (under $400,000 of taxable sales) can remit a fixed percentage of tax-included sales (e.g. 8.8% in Ontario for services) instead of tracking input tax credits, keeping the difference.
Is GST/HST charged on tips and gratuities?
Not on voluntary tips; a mandatory service charge added to the bill is taxable.
