In short

UK statutory redundancy pay, after two years' service, is half a week's pay for each year worked under age 22, one week for each year aged 22–40 and one and a half weeks for each year from 41, up to 20 years and a statutory weekly pay cap. It is tax-free.

Who this is for: UK employees facing redundancy who want the statutory minimum payment from age, service and weekly pay.

Not tax or legal advice. Statutory minimum only, using an approximation of age during each year of service. Your contract may provide more; take advice on the full settlement.

How statutory redundancy pay is worked out

Eligible after 2 years' continuous service. For each complete year you get: half a week's pay for years worked under age 22, one week for years aged 22–40, and one and a half weeks for years aged 41 and over. Service is capped at 20 years and weekly pay at the statutory cap, so the maximum award is 30 weeks × cap. Statutory redundancy pay is tax-free; contractual enhancements above it are taxed above £30,000.

Assumptions

  • Counts back one year at a time from your current age: 0.5 week under 22, 1 week for 22–40, 1.5 weeks from 41.
  • Service is capped at 20 years and weekly pay at the cap shown (editable).
  • Requires at least 2 complete years of service.

Worked example

Age 45, 12 years' service, £900/week, cap £751

Years aged 41–44: 4 × 1.5 = 6 weeks; years aged 33–40: 8 × 1 = 8 weeks → 14 weeks. Pay capped at £751 → £10,514.

Is statutory redundancy pay taxable?

No — statutory redundancy pay is tax-free, and the first £30,000 of a total redundancy package is also tax-free.
