How the Canada Child Benefit is calculated for July 2026 – June 2027

The CCB is a tax-free monthly payment of up to $8,157 a year per child under 6 and $6,883 per child aged 6–17, reduced as adjusted family net income (both parents' line 23600, less any UCCB or RDSP income) rises. Between $38,237 and $82,847 it falls by 7% of income for one child (13.5% for two, 19% for three, 23% for four or more); above $82,847 a fixed reduction applies plus 3.2% / 5.7% / 8% / 9.5% of the excess. A two-child family loses its last dollar of CCB at about $241,000.

  • Timing: payments from July 2026 to June 2027 depend on 2025 income — a raise or job loss shows up a year later (you can ask for a recalculation after a separation or death).
  • RRSP contributions raise the CCB: they reduce net income, so a $10,000 contribution by a two-child family in the phase-1 zone adds $1,350 of benefit on top of the tax refund — an effective return of 40–50%.
  • Child Disability Benefit: up to $3,480 more per child eligible for the disability tax credit, phased out above $82,847.
  • Shared custody: each parent receives 50% based on their own family income.
  • Provincial top-ups (Ontario Child Benefit up to $1,680, BC Family Benefit, Alberta Child and Family Benefit, Quebec Family Allowance) are paid separately.

Assumptions

  • Maximum = children under 6 × $8,157 + children 6–17 × $6,883; reduction = phase-1 rate × (AFNI − $38,237) up to $82,847, then fixed amount + phase-2 rate × (AFNI − $82,847), by number of children (1/2/3/4+).
  • CDB = $3,480 per eligible child less 3.2% (one child) / 5.7% (two+) of AFNI over $82,847; shared custody halves the result.
  • RRSP effect recomputes the CCB on AFNI less the contribution; equivalent salary = CCB ÷ (1 − marginal rate at half the family income).

Worked example

One child under 6 and one aged 6–17, family net income $95,000, Ontario

Maximum $8,157 + $6,883 = $15,040. Phase 1 (two children) reduction fixed at $6,022; phase 2: 5.7% × ($95,000 − $82,847) = $693 → annual CCB $8,325, i.e. $694 a month tax-free. Every extra dollar of family income costs 5.7 cents of CCB on top of income tax; the benefit reaches zero at about $241,000. A $10,000 RRSP contribution would add $570 of CCB next year plus roughly $3,000 of tax refund.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the Canada Child Benefit in 2026?

Up to $8,157 a year ($679.75 a month) for each child under 6 and $6,883 ($573.58 a month) for each child aged 6 to 17 for July 2026 – June 2027, reduced once family net income exceeds $38,237.

What is the income limit for the CCB?

There is no hard cut-off — the benefit phases out: one child under 6 reaches zero at about $240,000 of family net income, two children at about $241,000, three at about $251,000 (lower for older children).

When are CCB payments made?

Around the 20th of each month (or as a lump sum in July if the annual amount is under $240); the amount is recalculated every July based on the previous year's tax returns.

Is the CCB taxable?

No — it is tax-free and does not have to be reported as income; it also does not count toward the OAS or GIS income tests.

Do I have to file taxes to get the CCB?

Yes — both parents must file a return every year, even with no income, or payments stop; newcomers apply with form RC66 after establishing residency.

How does shared custody affect the CCB?

Each parent gets 50% of what they would receive with full custody, calculated on their own adjusted family net income (including a new spouse's income).

Does the CCB count as income for other benefits?

No — it is excluded from income for the GST/HST credit, provincial benefits and tax; it is also not reported on your return.

What if my income dropped this year?

The CCB is based on last year's return, so a drop shows up next July; only a change in marital status, custody or a death allows an immediate recalculation.
