In short

Engagement rate = (likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ followers × 100, averaged over recent posts; dividing by reach instead measures how content performs with those who saw it. Typical 2026 averages fall with size — Instagram about 3.5% under 10K followers, 2% at 10K–100K and 1% above 1M; TikTok roughly double those.

Who this is for: Creators, influencers, brands and agencies measuring and benchmarking engagement before sponsorships.

Not tax or legal advice. Benchmarks are commonly cited industry averages and vary by niche, country and year; use them as context, not as a rule.

How engagement rate is calculated

The standard formula brands use: (likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ followers × 100, averaged over recent posts (commonly the last 10–12). A second version divides by reach or views instead of followers — fairer for accounts whose posts reach many non-followers (TikTok, Reels, Shorts).

Commonly cited averages by follower count (indicative):

FollowersInstagramTikTokYouTubeXLinkedIn
Under 1K~6%~12%~6%~1%~5%
1K–10K~3.5%~8%~4%~0.6%~3%
10K–100K~2%~5.5%~3%~0.4%~2%
100K–1M~1.4%~4%~2%~0.2%~1.2%
Over 1M~1%~3%~1.5%~0.1%~1%

Smaller accounts naturally have higher rates, which is why sponsors value micro-influencers. A very low comment-to-like ratio, or a rate far below the band, is the classic sign of purchased followers.

Assumptions

  • Engagements per post = (likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ posts; rate by followers = ÷ followers; by reach = ÷ (reach ÷ posts).
  • Benchmarks by follower band and platform are commonly cited industry averages embedded in the page, not official figures.
  • Verdict thresholds: ≥150% of benchmark excellent, 80–150% good, 40–80% below average, <40% low.

Worked example

Instagram account with 25,000 followers, last 10 posts: 9,500 likes, 420 comments, 180 shares, 610 saves

Engagements per post = (9,500 + 420 + 180 + 610) ÷ 10 = 1,071 → rate by followers = 1,071 ÷ 25,000 = 4.28% — about twice the ~2% benchmark for a 10K–100K account: a healthy, sponsor-ready profile. With 60,000 average reach per post, the rate by reach is 1.8%.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?

Around 2% is average for 10K–100K accounts in 2026; 3–6% is strong; under 1% at that size is weak.

Should I count saves and shares?

Yes — Instagram and TikTok weight them heavily in distribution, and most brand briefs now include them. Older formulas used likes + comments only, which gives a lower number.

How do brands use this number?

As a first filter for sponsorships and to price posts: a micro-influencer with 5% engagement often out-delivers a 500K account at 0.8%.

Does this pull data from my account?

No — enter the figures from your Insights/Analytics screen; nothing is connected or stored.

How do you calculate engagement rate on Instagram?

(likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ followers × 100, averaged across your last 10 or so posts.

What is a good engagement rate on TikTok?

Roughly 5–8% for accounts between 10K and 100K followers; above 10% is excellent.
