In short

EU standard VAT rates range from 17% in Luxembourg to 27% in Hungary — Germany 19%, France 20%, Netherlands 21%, Italy 22%, Ireland 23%, Sweden and Denmark 25%. Cross-border B2B sales usually use the reverse charge; B2C distance sales charge the customer's country rate via the One Stop Shop.

Who this is for: Businesses selling into the EU who need the standard VAT rate of a member state and a quick add/remove calculation.

Not tax or legal advice. Standard rates only, as understood at build time. Rates and place-of-supply rules change — confirm with the relevant tax authority.

EU VAT: one system, 27 rates

The EU VAT Directive sets a minimum standard rate of 15%, but each member state chooses its own — from Luxembourg's 17% to Hungary's 27%. Reduced rates (and their scope) vary even more, so this tool covers standard rates only. Amounts are shown in euro, but the same percentages apply in the non-euro member states' own currencies.

For cross-border B2B sales the reverse charge usually applies (no VAT charged, customer accounts for it); for B2C distance sales the seller charges the customer's country rate via the One Stop Shop once EU-wide sales pass €10,000.

Assumptions

  • Standard rates only, from the rules file (marked verify).
  • Removing VAT divides by (1 + rate).

Worked example

€1,190 gross, Germany (19%)

Net = 1,190 ÷ 1.19 = €1,000; VAT = €190.
