In short
Australian GST is 10%: multiply a GST-exclusive price by 1.1 to add it, or divide a GST-inclusive price by 11 to find the GST inside. Businesses must register once turnover reaches $75,000 ($150,000 for non-profits; immediately for ride-share drivers) and report GST collected less input credits on a BAS, usually quarterly. Basic food, health, education and exports are GST-free; residential rent and financial supplies are input-taxed.
Who this is for: Australian consumers, tradies and small businesses working out GST and BAS.
GST in Australia
- Rate: 10%. To add GST multiply by 1.1; to find the GST in a price divide by 11; to strip it divide by 1.1.
- Registration: compulsory once GST turnover reaches $75,000 a year ($150,000 for non-profits), or from day one for taxi, limousine and rideshare drivers; optional below that.
- BAS: report GST collected (1A) and GST paid on business purchases (1B); the difference is paid or refunded. Quarterly BAS is due 28 October, 28 February, 28 April and 28 July (later via a BAS agent).
- GST-free vs input-taxed: both charge no GST, but only GST-free suppliers can claim credits on their inputs.
- Pricing: consumer prices must be shown GST-inclusive; business-to-business quotes are often ex-GST — always check which.

Assumptions
- GST = exclusive × 10%; inclusive ÷ 11.
- BAS: 1A = sales ÷ 11, 1B = purchases ÷ 11 (all taxable supplies).
- Registration compulsory at $75,000 of GST turnover.
Worked example
GST on $1,500 is $150, so the invoice total is $1,650 (and $1,650 ÷ 11 = $150 recovers it). BAS: GST on sales $66,000 ÷ 11 = $6,000; input credits $22,000 ÷ 11 = $2,000; net $4,000 payable for the quarter. Turnover of $240,000 is well above $75,000, so registration is compulsory.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate GST on a price?
Add 10% (× 1.1) to a GST-exclusive price; to find the GST inside a GST-inclusive price divide by 11.
When do I have to register for GST?
When your GST turnover reaches $75,000 in a 12-month period (or you expect it to), within 21 days — $150,000 for non-profits, and immediately for ride-share and taxi drivers.
What is GST-free?
Most basic food, medical and health services, education courses, childcare, exports and some precious metals — no GST is charged but the supplier can still claim input credits.
How often do I lodge a BAS?
Quarterly for most small businesses (monthly if turnover is over $20 million or by choice; annually if voluntarily registered under $75,000).
Do I charge GST to overseas customers?
Exports of goods and most services to non-residents are GST-free, but you can still claim credits on related purchases.
What is the GST on a car?
10% — but input credits are capped at one-eleventh of the car limit ($69,883 in 2026–27, so a maximum credit of $6,353); luxury car tax of 33% applies above the LCT threshold ($80,809, or $91,661 for fuel-efficient cars) on top.
